Rani DeMuth’s And Now I Lay Me Down: When Stardom Fades in Pink and Gold
Premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and the HollyShorts Film Festival, And Now I Lay Me Down is a dazzling and bittersweet short film by Rani DeMuth, starring Jane Kaczmarek as a once‑famous soap actress spiraling through a surreal, single day. In her conversation with La Radio du Cinéma, DeMuth reveals the heartbreak, humor, and personal pain that gave birth to her pink‑hued cinematic dream.
“She’s not exactly a role model,” DeMuth says of her lead character, “but if you go on a truthful journey with someone, you can always learn something.”
A character study of failure and grace
Celia Dalvi is big, brash, and unpredictable—sometimes mistaken for mentally ill. But DeMuth insists there’s power in her messiness. “The film explores what happens after stardom, after relevance,” she says. “It's about someone trying to matter again.”
A day in the life, inspired by Jeanne Dielman
Shot in Jane Kaczmarek’s real home, the film echoes the immersive style of Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman. “You read into every glance. It’s like a window into her soul,” says DeMuth. “Then at the end, you reevaluate everything—like The Sixth Sense.”
Humor as emotional relief
“Tone was my biggest challenge,” DeMuth admits. Humor, used right, “can make heavy themes more digestible.” One moment of grief is interrupted by Celia’s comically bad Spanish—a real, spontaneous beat that avoids melodrama.
Jane Kaczmarek’s house becomes Celia’s world
Kaczmarek not only stars but lent her house. “That kind of generosity is rare,” says DeMuth. Credited as executive producer, “she had her hands all over this film—in the best way.”
Visual identity born of a dream
“Pre-Barbie,” DeMuth laughs. Bubblegum pink, reds, purples—a dreamy, feminine palette inspired by Valentine’s candy and Wes Anderson. Despite limitations, her production designer Vanessa Leaska made the vision real.
Aging in Hollywood, from lived experience
After losing part of her nose to cancer in 2022, DeMuth found healing in creating Celia’s story. “It’s not me,” she says, “but there’s a reason I wrote it.”
What’s next?
And Now I Lay Me Down (27 mins) led to her feature debut, To the Line, a dark comedy about an eccentric mother who disrupts her family's life. Casting is now underway.

Présenté au Festival international du film de Santa Barbara et au HollyShorts Film Festival, And Now I Lay Me Down est un court-métrage flamboyant signé Rani DeMuth, avec Jane Kaczmarek (la maman de Malcolm) dans le rôle d’une star de soap déchue, embarquée dans une journée absurde et touchante. Dans une interview accordée à La Radio du Cinéma, la réalisatrice évoque ses blessures intimes et sa vision pop du chaos existentiel.
« Ce n’est pas une héroïne exemplaire », confie DeMuth, « mais si l’on suit honnêtement son parcours, on en ressort transformé. »
Une anti-héroïne chaotique et attachante
Celia Dalvi est excessive, instable, presque dérangeante. « Le film parle de ce qui arrive après la gloire, après la reconnaissance », explique DeMuth. « Comment on tente de redevenir visible. »
Une journée immersive, de Jeanne Dielman à Sixième Sens
Tourné chez Jane Kaczmarek, le film s’inspire de Jeanne Dielman de Chantal Akerman. « Je voulais qu’on lise chaque détail, chaque interaction. Puis, à la fin, qu’on revoie tout différemment. »
L’humour, comme soupape
La scène la plus triste ? Brisée par une phrase en espagnol prononcée dans un accent improbable. « Ça venait d’un vrai moment. C’est ce qui empêche la scène de sombrer dans le pathos. »
Une maison devenue royaume
Kaczmarek offre sa maison comme décor principal. « Une telle générosité est rare. Elle méritait amplement le titre de productrice exécutive. »
Un univers visuel né d’un rêve
Avant même l’écriture, Rani voit des couleurs : rose bonbon, rouge, violet. « Un clin d’œil à Wes Anderson. » Grâce à la cheffe déco Vanessa Leaska, cette vision pop devient réelle malgré les contraintes du décor.
Vieillir à Hollywood
En 2022, Rani perd une partie de son nez à cause d’un cancer de la peau. Le film est né de ce choc. « Ce n’est pas moi, mais il y a une raison pour laquelle je l’ai écrit. »
Et maintenant ?
And Now I Lay Me Down (27 min) a permis à DeMuth de lancer son premier long-métrage, To the Line, une comédie noire sur une mère excentrique. Le casting est en cours.
