Piazza Grande – Locarno Film Festival
Piazza Grande
6600, Locarno

  • Locarno Film Festival

Since 1946, the Locarno Film Festival has stood as one of the world’s most daring and visionary celebrations of cinema. Every August, the Piazza Grande turns into an open-air cinema unlike any other in Europe, where 8,000 spectators gather under the stars. Here’s a look back at the essence of this legendary festival — and the complete awards list of the 2025 edition.

Born in the aftermath of World War II, the Locarno Film Festival quickly established itself as one of the most influential events in world cinema. Recognized by the FIAPF, it belongs to the select circle of competitive festivals alongside Cannes, Venice, and Berlin.

Over the decades, Locarno has been a launchpad for filmmakers such as Claude Chabrol, Stanley Kubrick, Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee, and Claire Denis, long before they became household names. The festival’s reputation also rests on bold and sometimes controversial programming — from Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom to Bruce LaBruce’s L.A. Zombie.

Since 1971, the Piazza Grande has been the festival’s beating heart — one of the most stunning outdoor cinemas in the world. Around this symbolic venue, Locarno unfolds its different sections:

  • Concorso Internazionale, the main international competition.

  • Concorso Cineasti del Presente, dedicated to first and second features.

  • Pardi di Domani, a platform for shorts and medium-length films.

  • Fuori Concorso, a showcase for established filmmakers outside competition.

  • Open Doors, shining a spotlight on emerging cinemas from developing countries.

Locarno has also gained recognition for its retrospectives, honoring masters like Yasujirō Ozu, Orson Welles, and Agnès Varda. Its Golden Leopard and acting prizes have shaped the trajectory of many careers.

For audiences, the experience remains unforgettable: 8,000 people breathing, laughing, or holding their breath together under the night sky — cinema at its purest.
