After turning heads at SXSW, Dutch-Indonesian director Bear Damen returns with Synthesize Me, a hypnotic short film that dives deep into loss, family tension, and the transformative power of music. “It’s about how something must break before we can truly see each other,” Damen tells La Radio du Cinéma, following the film’s Palm Springs screening on June 27 2025.

In Synthesize Me, Ivanna Plantier plays Violeta, a young girl seeking refuge in her late mother’s music workshop. Her secret synth sessions trigger a town-wide blackout — a literal and emotional meltdown that forces her and her father into a shared repair mission. “I’ve been obsessed with synthesizers since I was a teen,” Damen shares. “I always wanted to make a story where a synth caused drama.”

The idea sparked when Damen visited a town near Mexico City. “The unstable electric grids mirrored the story’s emotional currents,” he says. “Mexico offered the perfect metaphor — and atmosphere — for these characters.” Though not Mexican himself, Damen’s nomadic upbringing (sailing the globe on a family boat) fed his passion for cross-cultural stories. “I’m drawn to liminal spaces — between countries, identities, even technologies.”

Shot by acclaimed Mexican cinematographer Alfonso Herrera Salcedo (A Love Song, Ex-Husbands), the film balances visual clarity with poetic abstraction. “There’s a lot of technical stuff — synths, fuses, transformers,” says Damen. “Alfonso made it emotionally legible, even for those unfamiliar with music tech.”

Beyond aesthetics, Synthesize Me is a deeply personal allegory. “It’s about how grief distorts communication,” says Damen. “Both characters rely on electricity, yet see it differently: the father, as work; the daughter, as art. That friction is emotional — and universal.”

For Damen, filmmaking is a form of therapy. “You study people, and in doing so, yourself,” he says. “It’s how I try to understand my own father.” Asked if he envisions a feature-length adaptation, he replies: “Yes, I already have an outline. These characters still have more to say.”

As for the audience takeaway? “We’re all badly connected,” he reflects. “But sometimes, when things break, we finally see each other.”

Bear Damen électrise Palm Springs avec “Synthesize Me” 

Après une sélection remarquée à SXSW, le réalisateur néerlandais-indonésien Bear Damen a présenté Synthesize Me à Palm Springs le 27 juin 2025. Ce court métrage puissant, porté par Ivanna Plantier, explore le deuil, les tensions père-fille et la musique comme langage universel. « Il faut parfois une rupture pour enfin se comprendre », confie Bear Damen à  Jenna Suru pour La Radio du Cinéma.

Dans Synthesize Me, Ivanna Plantier incarne Violeta, une fillette qui se réfugie dans l’ancien atelier musical de sa mère disparue. En manipulant les synthétiseurs, elle provoque une panne électrique générale. La réparation, entreprise avec son père en colère, devient une métaphore de leur lien fracturé. « Je collectionne les synthés depuis mon adolescence », raconte Damen. « J’ai toujours voulu qu’un synthé soit le moteur d’un drame. »

L’idée s’est cristallisée au Mexique. « Le réseau électrique instable reflétait les tensions émotionnelles du récit », explique le réalisateur. « Le Mexique m’a offert le décor parfait. » Une envie de tourner au-delà de ses frontières, nourrie par une enfance à bord d’un voilier familial. « J’ai grandi entre les cultures. Raconter des histoires transfrontalières est naturel pour moi. »

La photographie du film, signée Alfonso Herrera Salcedo (A Love Song, Ex-Husbands), sublime l’intime. « Il fallait rendre claires des notions techniques complexes », note Damen. « Alfonso a réussi à les traduire visuellement pour tous. »

Mais Synthesize Me est surtout une œuvre personnelle. « Le film parle de deux personnes qui utilisent la même source — l’électricité — pour des raisons différentes. L’un pour le travail, l’autre pour créer de la beauté. Cette opposition, c’est ma relation avec mon père. »

Le cinéma comme catharsis ? « Observer les autres, c’est se comprendre soi-même », confie-t-il. « C’est thérapeutique. » Un long métrage est-il envisagé ? « Oui. J’ai une version longue en préparation. Ces personnages ont encore des choses à dire. »

Ce que le public doit en retenir ? « Nous sommes mal connectés », conclut Bear Damen. « Mais parfois, il faut une panne pour qu’on commence enfin à se voir. »

Synthesize Me a été projeté au Regal Cinema à Palm Springs le 27 juin 2025 après sa première à SXSW (South by Southwest, est un festival international majeur qui se tient chaque année en mars à Austin, Texas (États-Unis).
